RCM Accredited training and treatment for Birth Trauma - Course Outline

Be the change you want to see in the World - Mahatma Gandhi'

EXCITING NEWS - Starting in May 2019

We are excited to announce that after two and a half years of running the Birth Trauma Resolution practitioner training programme we have decided to extend the training course to raise standards even higher.

Following feedback from the students who have undertaken this training, it was felt that a one-year programme would allow students even more time to develop the necessary skills to treat birth trauma patients and consolidate learning under supervised practice. This would enable practitioners to offer the highest standard of treatment and care whilst further improving the standard and quality of this gold standard training course.

We know that practitioners who have attended this training programme are achieving outstanding results. We already have two Trusts looking to open BTR therapy clinics, dedicated to offering a new and much needed service for women, partners and staff. Swansea university, who have been running a clinic for some time now, offer excellent care, support and fast and effective treatment for women suffering from birth trauma and PTSD. Furthermore, following a recent CQC inspection, one of the practitioners was awarded an ‘outstanding’ for BTR therapy. All this is in addition to the many practitioners now practicing BTR therapy either privately or within their Trust. I believe that this exciting trend is set to continue.

The new one year training programme

  • Part Two

Students will be required to attend 3 live teaching days.

Life after birth trauma and PTSD

Students are required to attend a further 3 days training packed with a variety of specially selected tools, techniques and behavioural strategies for rebuilding confidence, relationships and reducing feelings of loss following a traumatic birth.

Over the course of the 3 days, students will consolidate their learning by being asked to design treatment strategies for different types of presenting issues. It is my firm belief that it is not enough to attend training and be given a treatment ‘tools kit’. To offer highly effective treatment, practitioners need the confidence to know when to apply those tools to different case studies. BTR therapy is patient centred and as thus requires practitioners to be able to modify their treatment offering according to the individual needs of the patient.

    Learning outcomes:

  • To be able to use a variety of tools to rebuild confidence, forge nurturing relationships and reduce feelings of loss following a traumatic birth. Students will be able to do this by dissolving ineffective templates and creating new positive mental patterns helping to support mother, partners and staff back to health and wellbeing.
  • For students to be able to give patients a variety of strategies and techniques to continue their treatment outside the therapy room. This helps to foster a feeling of self-efficacy in the patient.
  • To be able to plan a course of treatment for the patient in accordance with their individual needs and requirements.
  • To understand when to refer on to a mental health specialists.

    Part Three

    Assessment day

Students are required to treat another student under assessment conditions.
Students are also required to submit a 3,000-word case study.

Ongoing supervision and support throughout the training period

    Month One - Five

Students will be invited to join a closed group and receive support and supervision with their ongoing case studies. This is one of the most powerful parts of the course and offers students a chance to consolidate their learning.

    Month 6

Achieve a pass in the foundation stage of the course – you can now charge patients.

    Month 7-12

Undertake monthly group supervision on Skype.

    Month 12

Undertake an open book written assessment. Students will need to write treatment plans for 3 case studies demonstrating an awareness of how to treat a variety of presenting birth trauma issues using all the tools and skills learned on the course. The case studies will be made up of fictitious case histories written by the course tutor.

    Month 12

After successfully completing the final assessment, students will be awarded full practitioner status and be invited to appear on the practitioner register.
